I am trying to install SharePoint 2016, All SharePoint 2016 prerequisites have been installed correctly but when I tried to run the SharePoint 2016 Products Configuration Wizard, it's failed! I faced the below error:

Failed to secure SharePoint Resources
An exception of type System.UnauthorizedAccessException was thrown.
Additional exception Information: Attempted to perform an authorized operation

An exception of type System.UnauthorizedAccessException was thrown. Additional exception Information Attempted to perform an authorized operation

How can I solve this issue?

Failed to secure SharePoint Resources

This issue may occur if the Symantec Endpoint Protection Service is running on your SharePoint server and not configured properly It will block the connectivity between the SharePoint Server and Database Server lead to this error

Failed to secure SharePoint Resources An exception of type System.UnauthorizedAccessException was thrown.
Additional exception Information: Attempted to perform an authorized operation

To solve this issue, you should do the following:

  • As a temporary solution, If you have permission to stop Symantec Endpoint Protection service on the SharePoint servers, try to temporarily stop it then run the SharePoint configuration wizard to make sure that it's the main root cause of this issue.

Antivirus configuration for SharePoint

If you stopped the Symantec Endpoint Protection service and the SharePoint configuration wizard is completed successfully, so you should request from your antivirus administrator to do the following:

Configure Antivirus for SharePoint Server

  1. Exclude the SQL Server port to be blocking by antivirus (the default port is 1433).
  2. Exclude the antivirus to scan the below SharePoint Directory to avoid a SharePoint Performance issue.

    • All the folders under Drive:\Program Files\Microsoft Office Servers
    • All the folders under Drive:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions
    • Drive:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework64\v4.0.30319\Temporary ASP.NET Files
    • Drive:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework64\v4.0.30319\Config
    • Drive: \Users\ServiceAccount\AppData\Local\Temp\WebTempDir

Note The WebTempDir folder is a replacement for the FrontPageTempDir folder.

    • Drive:\ProgramData\Microsoft\SharePoint
    • Drive:\Users\account that the search service is running as\AppData\Local\Temp
    • Drive:\WINDOWS\System32\LogFiles
    • Drive:\Windows\Syswow64\LogFiles
    • Drive:\inetpub\wwwroot\wss\VirtualDirectories\
    • All the folders under Drive:\inetpub\temp\IIS Temporary Compressed Files\

  • You should stop Symantec Endpoint Protection service on the SharePoint servers and exclude SharePoint files and Microsoft Shared folder that's found in path "C:\Program Files\Common Files\microsoft shared" from the scan setup folder.

  • This service prevents the SharePoint 2016 Products Configuration Wizard to be finished successfully.

  • It blocks the network connection between SharePoint and DB Instance.**
