I am managing a team in Microsoft Teams, and we are planning to create private channels to handle sensitive discussions within smaller groups. Before proceeding, I want to ensure that the private channels we create will accommodate all the necessary team members. Could you please confirm the maximum number of members allowed in a private channel and any related limitations?

Member limit for a private channel in Microsoft Teams?

As short Answer: A private channel in Microsoft Teams can have up to 250 members. This limit includes all types of members owners and participants. If you need to accommodate more users, consider using standard or shared channels, which have higher member limits.

What's Private Channel?

A private channel in Microsoft Teams is a channel that is accessible only to a subset of team members. It is designed to facilitate secure and focused collaboration among specific individuals without exposing the content to the entire team.

Key Features of a Private Channel:

  • Only members invited to the private channel can access its content.
  • Files shared in a private channel are stored in a separate SharePoint site, distinct from the main team.
  • Discussions within the private channel are exclusive to its members, maintaining privacy and focus.
  • Members can include team owners and members but not external guests.

Key Considerations and Limitations:

  • Each team can have a maximum of 30 private channels.
  • Files and permissions for private channels are managed in a separate SharePoint site, which may require additional administrative effort.
  • External guests added to the main team cannot access private channels.
  • Since private channels have their own SharePoint sites, ensure that your organization's backup and compliance policies cover these additional sites.
  • Bots and connectors that work in standard channels might not be supported in private channels.
