I am managing a Microsoft Teams environment for my organization, and we heavily rely on private channels to facilitate focused discussions among specific groups within a team. I need to plan the structure of our teams and channels while staying within the limitations set by Microsoft Teams.

Can you clarify how many private channels can be created within a single team, including any deleted channels? Also, are there any considerations or limitations regarding private channel usage?

Private Channel Limits in Microsoft Teams

A team in Microsoft Teams can have up to 30 private channels, including any deleted channels.

Note: Deleted channels count towards this limit for 30 days after deletion, as this is the retention period during which they can be restored.

Private Channel Key Considerations

Here are a few key considerations regarding private channels:

  • Each private channel can have up to 250 members.
  • Private channels are designed for discussions that should only be visible to a subset of team members.
  • Apps and bots configured at the team level won't automatically have access to private channels unless explicitly added.
  • Ensure to plan the use of private channels wisely to avoid hitting the limit, especially if your team regularly creates and deletes channels.

For more details, refer to the Microsoft Teams limits and specifications documentation.
