On Jan 14, 2020, Microsoft has announced the retirement of more than 15 products that reached the end of support.

What does the end of support mean?

Microsoft support life cycleWhen a product retired or reach its end of support, there will be NO

  • New security updates,
  • New non-security updates,
  • Free and Paid support options.
  • Online technical content updates. 

Briefly, End of support means updates are no longer provided, and it is highly recommended to upgrade to the latest on-premise or cloud version.

What's the Risk after the support has ended?

Microsoft End of support riskAfter the support has ended, your PC/Server, as well as your product, will still work, but Microsoft will no longer

  • Provide technical support for any issues, 
  • Update the technical documentation.
  • Provide bug fixes.
  • Additionally, you will stop receiving security and quality updates. therefore, it may become more vulnerable to security risks.

Microsoft products reaching the end of support | Today (01/14/2020)

Windows 7 end of support

Below is a list of Microsoft products reaching its end of support on Jan 14, 2020.

Windows 7*

  • Mainstream support end date:01/13/2015.
  • Extended support end date: 01/14/2020.
  • Action: to keep secure and supported, it's recommended to upgrade to Windows 10.

Windows Server 2008 and 2008 R2*

  • Windows Server 2008 end of supportMainstream support end date:01/13/2015.
  • Extended support end date: 01/14/2020.
  • Action: to keep secure and supported, it's recommended to upgrade to Windows Server 2016 / 2019.

  • Extended Support end date: 10/13/2020.
  • Action: 
    • Upgrade to Office 365 as a cloud solution.
    • Upgrade to SharePoint 2016 / 2019 as an on-prem solution.

The Exchange Server 2010 end of support was 01/14/2020 but it has been extended to 10/13/2020 to give customers more time to complete their migrations as well as to be aligned with the end of support for 

  • Office 2010 includes Word, Outlook, Powerpoint, and Excel.
  • Project Server 2010.
  • SharePoint Server 2010.
  • SharePoint Foundation 2010.
