I want to upgrade from Project Server 2016 to Project Server 2019, and I need to prepare a new farm for Project Server 2019 and SQL Server 2019. So can I install Project Server 2019 on SQL Server 2019?

Supported SQL Server versions for Project Server 2019

As a short answer: Yes, SQL Server 2019 is supported in Project Server 2019 / SharePoint 2019.

As we know, Project Server 2019 runs as a service application in SharePoint Server 2019 Enterprise Edition, so you just need to make sure that the SQL Server is supported for SharePoint 2019 as below:

  • SQL Server 2019 Standard or Enterprise Edition.
  • SQL Server 2017 Standard or Enterprise Edition.
  • SQL Server 2016 Standard or Enterprise Edition.
  • Any future version of SQL Server for Windows that supports database compatibility level 130.
  • If your SharePoint Server farm is hosted in Microsoft Azure.
  • Microsoft Azure SQL Managed Instance is only supported.

Note: All future public updates and Service Pack for the above SQL Version are supported.

Unsupported SQL Server versions for Project Server 2019

  • SQL Server Express (All Versions).
  • SQL Server 2014 and all its Service Packs and CUs.
  • SQL Server 2012 and all its Service Packs and CUs.
  • Microsoft Azure SQL Database ( Non-Managed Instance).
